FFre Frequently Asked Questions:
- 1. Who can be an athlete at the Transplant Games?
Any organ transplant recipient who is a minimum of six months post transplant may attend. Bone marrow transplant recipients may also participate. Doctor approval required.
- 2. What events are held?
There are 37 events in 13 sports: Swimming, Track and Field, Volleyball, Basketball, Golf, Table tennis, Tennis, Badminton, Bowling, 5K walk/run, Cycling, and Racquetball.
- 3. Do I have to be very competitive and athletic to attend?
No. Recipients of all ages and athletic skills participate. You can select your sport depending on your fitness level and ability. A medical waiver must be signed by your doctor to participate.
- 4. How much will it cost?
Each recipient athlete must raise $400 for the team. The cost of attending is approximately $1000 per person so additional personal fundraising is highly encouraged to help offset the individual's costs. If you still want to attend, we suggest you hold car washes, obtain corporate sponsors, or pursue ambitious fundraising through our page.
- 5. How can I get more involved?
If you would like to join our steering committee and help with fundraising, recruitment, publicity and planning team events, please contact the team manager or steering committee chair. Your input and volunteer efforts would be greatly appreciated!
- 6. How can the Games help Donor families?
This is an opportunity for donor families to meet other donor families and transplant recipients and share their stories among those who understand. There are workshops for grief support and remembrance ceremonies to honor their loved ones. Many donor families are moved by the experience and return year after year. The Games celebrate the legacy of both living and deceased donors.
- 7. Does the team fill up?
No. There is no limit to our team size. Our goal is to recruit 75 athletes and 25 donor family members.
